James Patterson's detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross has been played by Morgan Freeman, Tyler Perry and Aldis Hodge. Here's how to watch every adaptation in order.
Alex Cross is the hero of more than thirty bestselling novels by James Patterson. The Washington, D.C. detective first reached screens in Kiss the Girls, with Morgan Freeman hunting a serial kidnapper alongside Ashley Judd. Freeman returned for Along Came a Spider, Tyler Perry rebooted the role in 2012, and Prime Video's Cross brought the character to television with Aldis Hodge.
π Release Order
Release order lets you see how each era interpreted Patterson's hero.
- Kiss the Girls (1997)
- Along Came a Spider (2001)
- Alex Cross (2012)
- Cross (2024β)
The franchise is famous for a quirk: the first book became the second film.
π Story Chronology
Along Came a Spider was Patterson's first Alex Cross novel, but the film was made as a sequel to Kiss the Girls and is set after it. Alex Cross (2012) is a reboot showing a younger detective in Detroit, and Cross is another fresh start set in modern-day D.C. That gives you three separate continuities.
- Kiss the Girls (1997)
- Along Came a Spider (2001)
- Alex Cross (2012) β reboot
- Cross (2024β) β reboot
Which Order Should You Choose?
If you love classic 90s thrillers, start with the two Morgan Freeman films in release order; they form a satisfying pair. Tyler Perry's movie is optional. For a deeper, more character-driven take, jump straight into Cross, which needs no prior viewing and gives Alex's family and personal trauma far more room than the films ever could.
