American Horror Story is FX's groundbreaking anthology horror series, with each season telling a brand-new terrifying tale. While most seasons stand alone, some are deeply connected — making watch order more important than it first appears.
Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story reinvented the anthology format when it debuted in 2011, bringing back the same roster of actors in entirely new roles each season. While early seasons are mostly self-contained, the show began weaving interconnected mythology from Season 8 onward — most famously with Apocalypse, which acts as a crossover sequel to Murder House and Coven. Understanding those connections makes the viewing order matter more than you might expect.
🕐 Release Order
Release order is the best approach for new viewers — the season-to-season callbacks are most impactful when experienced as they were intended.
- AHS: Murder House — Season 1 (2011)
- AHS: Asylum — Season 2 (2012)
- AHS: Coven — Season 3 (2013)
- AHS: Freak Show — Season 4 (2014)
- AHS: Hotel — Season 5 (2015)
- AHS: Roanoke — Season 6 (2016)
- AHS: Cult — Season 7 (2017)
- AHS: Apocalypse — Season 8 (2018)
- AHS: 1984 — Season 9 (2019)
- AHS: Double Feature — Season 10 (2021)
- AHS: NYC — Season 11 (2022)
- AHS: Delicate — Season 12 (2024)
Season 8 (Apocalypse) acts as a direct sequel to both Murder House (Season 1) and Coven (Season 3), so watching those two seasons first makes the Apocalypse payoffs all the more satisfying.
📖 Story Chronology
Most AHS seasons are set in or around their air dates, so release order and chronological order are nearly identical. The notable exception is 1984 (Season 9), which is set in the summer of 1984 but aired in 2019.
- AHS: 1984 — Season 9 (set in 1984)
- AHS: Murder House — Season 1 (set in 2011)
- AHS: Asylum — Season 2 (set in 1964 and 2012)
- AHS: Coven — Season 3 (set in present day 2013)
- AHS: Freak Show — Season 4 (set in 1952)
- AHS: Hotel — Season 5 (set in 2015)

- AHS: Cult — Season 7 (set in 2016–2017)
- AHS: Apocalypse — Season 8 (set post-2018)
- AHS: Double Feature — Season 10 (2021)

- AHS: Delicate — Season 12 (2024)
Which Order Should You Choose?
Watch American Horror Story in release order. The anthology format means you can technically jump in at any season, but the most rewarding path is to start with Murder House (Season 1), then Coven (Season 3), before tackling Apocalypse (Season 8) — which pays off those two seasons spectacularly. Seasons like Asylum and Hotel are fan favourites that stand entirely on their own. AHS rewards patient viewing: even when seasons vary in quality, the performances and atmosphere are consistently compelling.
