Babylon 5 is one of the most ambitious science fiction series ever made, a five-season novel for television surrounded by TV movies and a spin-off. Getting the order right is essential to enjoying its carefully planned story arcs.

Created by J. Michael Straczynski, Babylon 5 follows the crew of a space station built as a neutral meeting ground for humans and alien races after a devastating war. Unlike most 1990s sci-fi, the show was planned as one long story, with prophecies, betrayals and interstellar wars unfolding across five seasons. Around the main series sit several TV movies, the short-lived spin-off Crusade and the animated film The Road Home.

πŸ• Release Order

Release order is how fans originally experienced the saga, including the pilot movie that set everything in motion.

  1. Babylon 5: The Gathering (1993)
  2. Babylon 5 (1994–1998)
  3. Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998)
  4. Babylon 5: Thirdspace (1998)
  5. Babylon 5: The River of Souls (1998)
  6. Babylon 5: A Call to Arms (1999)
  7. Crusade (1999)
  8. Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (2002)
  9. Babylon 5: The Lost Tales (2007)
  10. Babylon 5: The Road Home (2023)

Several of the movies jump around the timeline. In the Beginning is a prequel about the Earth-Minbari War, while Thirdspace slots into the middle of the series, so a chronological viewing reshuffles a few entries.

πŸ“– Story Chronology

In story order, the Earth-Minbari War comes first, followed by the station's story and then the later adventures that lead into Crusade.

  1. Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998) β€” the Earth-Minbari War
  2. Babylon 5: The Gathering (1993)
  3. Babylon 5 (1994–1998) β€” Seasons 1–3
  4. Babylon 5: Thirdspace (1998) β€” set during Season 4
  5. Babylon 5 (1994–1998) β€” Seasons 4–5
  6. Babylon 5: The River of Souls (1998)
  7. Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (2002)
  8. Babylon 5: A Call to Arms (1999)
  9. Crusade (1999)
  10. Babylon 5: The Lost Tales (2007)
  11. Babylon 5: The Road Home (2023)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Newcomers should stick close to release order, because In the Beginning spoils major mysteries from the early seasons. Watch The Gathering, then the series, then the movies. Chronological order is best saved for a rewatch, when seeing the Minbari War first adds poignancy to everything that follows.
