Before Spider-Man, Sam Raimi created his own tragic superhero. Here's how to watch the Darkman trilogy in order.
Darkman (1990) stars Liam Neeson as Peyton Westlake, a scientist developing synthetic skin who is left horribly disfigured by gangsters. Rendered unable to feel pain and consumed by rage, he becomes a vigilante who uses his temporary masks to impersonate his enemies. Raimi's gothic, comic-book style made the film a cult favorite, and two direct-to-video sequels followed with Arnold Vosloo taking over the lead role.
๐ Release Order
The trilogy was released over six years.
- Darkman (1990)
- Darkman II: The Return of Durant (1995)
- Darkman III: Die Darkman Die (1996)
The sequels continue the original story, though they quietly gloss over some of its details.
๐ Story Chronology
Darkman II brings back the villain Robert Durant, played by Larry Drake, who is revealed to have survived the first film. Darkman III pits Peyton against a new crime boss played by Jeff Fahey. The sequels were shot back to back, and the story runs straight from one to the next.
- Darkman (1990)
- Darkman II: The Return of Durant (1995)
- Darkman III: Die Darkman Die (1996)
Which Order Should You Choose?
Release and story order are identical, so watch them in sequence. The original is the must-see entry, packed with Raimi's signature camera tricks, Danny Elfman's score and a memorable Frances McDormand. The sequels are lower-budget but fun for fans who want more of Peyton's story.
