Marvel's Netflix shows built their own street-level universe, with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist teaming up in The Defenders. Watching the seasons in the right order makes every crossover land.
Before Disney+ existed, Marvel and Netflix created a gritty corner of New York filled with vigilantes, crime lords and the mysterious Hand. Six series and thirteen seasons later, the Defenders Saga became one of the most binge-worthy superhero experiments ever. Characters like Claire Temple, Foggy Nelson and Trish Walker hop between shows, so the order you watch them really matters. Daredevil: Born Again has since brought Matt Murdock and Frank Castle back on Disney+.
๐ Release Order
Release order is the best way to experience the saga, since each season was written with the previous ones in mind.
- Daredevil Season 1 (2015)
- Jessica Jones Season 1 (2015)
- Daredevil Season 2 (2016)
- Luke Cage Season 1 (2016)
- Iron Fist Season 1 (2017)
- The Defenders (2017)
- The Punisher Season 1 (2017)
- Jessica Jones Season 2 (2018)
- Luke Cage Season 2 (2018)
- Iron Fist Season 2 (2018)
- Daredevil Season 3 (2018)
- The Punisher Season 2 (2019)
- Jessica Jones Season 3 (2019)
- Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 (2025)
Because the shows were planned as one connected story, the in-universe timeline mirrors release order almost exactly. The one wrinkle is that the shows from 2018 onward overlap and can be watched in a slightly different sequence.
๐ Story Chronology
This chronological order places the post-Defenders seasons according to their references to each other, with Daredevil Season 3 following the cliffhanger at the end of The Defenders.
- Daredevil Season 1 (2015)
- Jessica Jones Season 1 (2015)
- Daredevil Season 2 (2016)
- Luke Cage Season 1 (2016)
- Iron Fist Season 1 (2017)
- The Defenders (2017)
- The Punisher Season 1 (2017)
- Jessica Jones Season 2 (2018)
- Luke Cage Season 2 (2018)
- Iron Fist Season 2 (2018)
- Daredevil Season 3 (2018)
- The Punisher Season 2 (2019)
- Jessica Jones Season 3 (2019)
- Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 (2025)
Which Order Should You Choose?
Go with release order. It's essentially identical to the chronology and keeps every cameo and crossover in context. If you're short on time, prioritize all three Daredevil seasons, Jessica Jones Season 1, The Defenders and The Punisher before jumping into Daredevil: Born Again.
