Dungeons & Dragons, the world's most famous tabletop role-playing game, has been adapted into an animated series and several movies. Here's how to watch every on-screen D&D adventure in order.
Created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974, Dungeons & Dragons became a cultural phenomenon. Its first screen adaptation was a 1980s Saturday-morning cartoon about kids transported into the Realm. A live-action movie followed in 2000, along with two made-for-TV sequels. In 2023, Honor Among Thieves, starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, finally delivered a big-screen hit that captured the game's spirit of adventure.
π Release Order
Release order covers more than 40 years of D&D on screen.
- Dungeons & Dragons (1983β1985)
- Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
- Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005)
- Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness (2012)
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Most adaptations are standalone stories. Wrath of the Dragon God is a loose sequel to the 2000 film, bringing back the villain Damodar, while Honor Among Thieves is set in the Forgotten Realms and doesn't require any prior viewing.
π Story Chronology
There's no single continuity, so the in-universe order follows the connected films first and treats the rest as standalone adventures.
- Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
- Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005) β loose sequel
- Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness (2012) β standalone
- Dungeons & Dragons (1983β1985) β standalone animated series
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) β standalone
Which Order Should You Choose?
Start with Honor Among Thieves. It's the most accessible, entertaining and faithful adaptation and needs no background. If you're curious, the 1980s cartoon is a nostalgic treat, while the older live-action films are mainly for completionists.
