The Expendables franchise is a love letter to action cinema of the 1980s and 1990s, assembling jaw-dropping rosters of action icons — Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, and many more — for explosive missions that prioritise old-school thrills over CGI spectacle. Stallone writes, directs, and stars in the series as Barney Ross, leader of a mercenary crew that takes on the jobs nobody else will. The Expendables films follow the same team on successive missions, so release order is also the natural story order. Each entry is fairly standalone, but character dynamics and team membership evolve across the series.

Story chronology is identical to release order. There are no prequels or timeline complications in The Expendables series — the films are sequential and each one builds on the team's history from the previous.

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch in release order, starting with the original to get the full team dynamic established. The Expendables 2 is the fan favourite and makes for an especially rewarding watch if you've seen the first. The Expendables 3 tones down the violence for a PG-13 rating (much to fans' disappointment) but brings in a great new cast. Expend4bles reverts to an R rating and gives Statham a bigger role. Each film is essentially self-contained, so you can also jump in at any point without feeling lost — but you'll get the most out of the series by watching from the beginning.
