How to watch the Lonesome Dove miniseries in order

Lonesome Dove is often called the greatest western ever made for television, and its prequels and sequels jump across five decades. Here's how to watch Gus and Call's story in order.

Based on Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the 1989 Lonesome Dove miniseries starred Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as retired Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call. Its success led to two more McMurtry adaptations set before the original, one set after it, plus a non-McMurtry sequel and two syndicated TV series. Because the stories were released out of order, the franchise is a classic watch order puzzle.

πŸ• Release Order

Release order starts with the masterpiece itself, which is how most viewers first meet Gus and Call.

  1. Lonesome Dove (1989)
  2. Return to Lonesome Dove (1993)
  3. Lonesome Dove: The Series (1994–1995)
  4. Streets of Laredo (1995)
  5. Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years (1995–1996)
  6. Dead Man's Walk (1996)
  7. Comanche Moon (2008)

McMurtry wrote the novels out of sequence too, so the story timeline looks quite different from the order these miniseries reached screens.

πŸ“– Story Chronology

Dead Man's Walk shows young Gus and Call as new Rangers in the 1840s, and Comanche Moon follows them through the 1850s and 1860s. Lonesome Dove takes place in the 1870s and Streets of Laredo concludes Call's story decades later. Return to Lonesome Dove and the two TV series were not written by McMurtry and sit outside his official timeline.

  1. Dead Man's Walk (1996)
  2. Comanche Moon (2008)
  3. Lonesome Dove (1989)
  4. Streets of Laredo (1995)
  5. Return to Lonesome Dove (1993) β€” alternate, non-McMurtry sequel
  6. Lonesome Dove: The Series (1994–1995)
  7. Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years (1995–1996)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Always start with Lonesome Dove (1989). Its emotional impact depends on meeting Gus and Call as old men, and the prequels are richer once you know where they end up. After that, go back for Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon, then finish with Streets of Laredo. Treat Return to Lonesome Dove and the TV series as optional extras.
