Guillermo del Toro's creepy-crawly Mimic spawned a pair of direct-to-video sequels. Here's how to watch the full trilogy of genetically engineered insect horror.

In Mimic, an entomologist engineers a breed of insects to wipe out a disease spread by cockroaches in New York City. Three years later, the Judas Breed has evolved into human-sized predators that can imitate their prey. Guillermo del Toro's Hollywood debut became a cult favorite, and two lower-budget sequels continued the story underground. Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam and Charles S. Dutton lead the cast, and the subway tunnels beneath Manhattan make for a wonderfully claustrophobic setting. The film was famously troubled behind the scenes, with studio interference reshaping del Toro's cut, but its creature design and grimy atmosphere have earned it a loyal following.

๐Ÿ• Release Order

The series was released over just six years, and release order follows the storyline directly.

  1. Mimic (1997)
  2. Mimic 2 (2001)
  3. Mimic 3: Sentinel (2003)

Unlike many horror franchises, the Mimic films do form a continuous timeline. Mimic 2 follows a minor character from the original, and Sentinel keeps the Judas Breed threat alive in a new neighborhood.

๐Ÿ“– Story Chronology

Story chronology is identical to release order, with each film taking place after the last.

  1. Mimic (1997)
  2. Mimic 2 (2001)
  3. Mimic 3: Sentinel (2003)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch them in order. The original is the clear highlight, especially in del Toro's director's cut. The sequels are modest, but Mimic 3: Sentinel's Rear Window-style premise makes it a fun watch for creature-feature fans. The whole trilogy runs well under five hours, making it an easy weekend marathon for anyone who loves bug-based horror in the vein of Them! and The Fly.
