Disney's Pocahontas paired sweeping animation with one of the studio's most celebrated soundtracks, then followed it with a direct-to-video sequel that sends its heroine to England. Here is how to watch both.
Released in 1995, Pocahontas was Disney's first animated feature loosely inspired by a historical figure. Featuring the Oscar-winning song 'Colors of the Wind,' the film follows Pocahontas as English settlers arrive in Virginia and she forms a bond with John Smith. Three years later, a sequel continued her story with a diplomatic journey across the Atlantic, introducing John Rolfe and a very different side of the 1600s.
๐ Release Order
With just two films, release order is simple and follows the characters' journey directly.
- Pocahontas (1995)
- Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)
The sequel picks up after John Smith returns to England at the end of the first film, so the story moves forward without any flashbacks or prequel material.
๐ Story Chronology
Chronologically, the first film covers the settlers' arrival and the conflict between the colonists and the Powhatan people, while the sequel follows Pocahontas to London on a mission to prevent war.
- Pocahontas (1995)
- Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)
Which Order Should You Choose?
Watch them in release order. The original is the essential experience, with gorgeous visuals, a memorable Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz score, and a strong emotional ending. The sequel is lighter and smaller in scale, but it gives fans closure on Pocahontas' story and introduces John Rolfe. Keep in mind that both films take major liberties with history, so they are best enjoyed as fairy-tale storytelling rather than a lesson on the real Pocahontas. Families working through the Disney Renaissance can follow up with Mulan or The Lion King next.
