Quantum Leap sent Dr. Sam Beckett bouncing through time to put right what once went wrong, and a 2022 revival picked up his legacy decades later. Here is how to watch both series.

Created by Donald P. Bellisario, Quantum Leap premiered on NBC in 1989 with Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett, a scientist trapped leaping into other people's lives, and Dean Stockwell as Al, his holographic guide. Each episode dropped Sam into a new decade and a new identity, mixing drama, comedy, and history. The show ran for five seasons, ending with one of TV's most debated finales, and NBC revived it in 2022 with Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song.

๐Ÿ• Release Order

Here are both series in release order.

  1. Quantum Leap (1989)
  2. Quantum Leap (2022)

The revival is a direct continuation. Set roughly 30 years after Sam's disappearance, it follows a new team restarting the Quantum Leap project, with Ben leaping in his own mysterious mission.

๐Ÿ“– Story Chronology

Story chronology matches the release order: the original five seasons come first, and the revival's two seasons follow in the present day.

  1. Quantum Leap Seasons 1-5 (1989-1993)
  2. Quantum Leap (2022) Seasons 1-2 (2022-2024)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch the original series first. Its episodic format makes it easy to watch casually, but the full run builds toward the finale, 'Mirror Image,' whose final message gives the revival its emotional foundation. Fans who loved Sam and Al should then continue to the revival, which ran for two seasons and includes many callbacks to the original, especially in later episodes. If time-travel stories are your thing, Back to the Future and Doctor Who are natural follow-ups.
