Ranma ½ is Rumiko Takahashi's classic martial-arts rom-com about a boy cursed to turn into a girl when splashed with cold water. Between the long-running series, OVAs, films, and a modern remake, here's the order.
Ranma Saotome trains in martial arts, but after falling into a cursed spring he transforms into a girl with cold water and back into a boy with hot water. Add an arranged engagement to the fiery Akane Tendo and a cast of rival martial artists, and you get one of the most beloved comedy franchises in anime history.
🕐 Release Order
Release order follows the original two TV series, the theatrical films, and the OVA collections that continued the story.
- Ranma ½ (1989)
- Ranma ½: Nettohen (1989)
- Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China (1991 film)
- Ranma ½: Nihao My Concubine (1992 film)
- Ranma ½ OVA series (1993)
- Ranma ½ (2024 remake)
Ranma ½ is largely episodic, so you don't need to agonize over continuity — but there's still a natural flow to the entries.
📖 Story Chronology
The two original series run back-to-back, with the films and OVAs set during and after that run.
- Ranma ½ and Ranma ½: Nettohen (1989) — the core TV run
- The theatrical films and OVAs (1991–1996) — further adventures
- Ranma ½ (2024) — a modern retelling of the manga
Which Order Should You Choose?
Because the humor is episodic, you can comfortably watch in release order: start with the original 1989 series, roll into Nettohen, then enjoy the films and OVAs. If you'd rather sample a sharper, modernized version, the 2024 remake is an excellent and faithful entry point that re-adapts the manga from the beginning. Either way, Ranma ½ remains a delightful, chaotic comedy that holds up decades later.
