Record of Lodoss War is a foundational fantasy anime, born from tabletop RPG sessions and steeped in classic sword-and-sorcery adventure. With an OVA and a TV series, here's the watch order.

Rooted in Japanese Dungeons-and-Dragons-style replays, Record of Lodoss War helped popularize high fantasy in anime, following the young knight Parn and his companions across the war-torn island of Lodoss. With elves, dark sorcery, and epic quests, it's a touchstone of the genre β€” and its two main adaptations tell the story differently.

πŸ• Release Order

Release order starts with the original OVA and continues with the later TV series.

  1. Record of Lodoss War (1990 OVA)
  2. Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (1998)

The OVA condenses the early novels, while the TV series re-tells and then extends the saga with a second generation of heroes.

πŸ“– Story Chronology

Chronologically, the OVA covers Parn's original journey, and the TV series expands beyond it into later conflicts.

  1. Record of Lodoss War (1990) β€” Parn's first great war
  2. Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (1998) β€” the continuation and next generation

Which Order Should You Choose?

Start with the 1990 OVA, which is the most focused and atmospheric telling of Parn's adventure. Then watch Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, which revisits those events before pushing the story forward with new heroes. Watching in release order works perfectly here, giving you the classic tale first and the broader epic second.
