Tenchi Muyo! is the harem anime that helped define the genre, following ordinary boy Tenchi surrounded by alien princesses and space pirates. With several continuities, here's how to watch it.
Tenchi Masaki's quiet life is upended when he accidentally frees the space pirate Ryoko and soon finds his home full of extraterrestrial women, including the Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami. A hugely influential franchise, Tenchi Muyo! spawned multiple separate continuities, which is exactly why a watch-order guide is so useful.
π Release Order
Release order shows the franchise branching from its original OVA into alternate TV versions.
- Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (1992 OVA)
- Tenchi Universe (1995)
- Tenchi Muyo! in Love (1996 film)
- Tenchi in Tokyo (1997)
- Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 3 (2003)
- Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 4 (2016)
Crucially, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are separate retellings, not sequels to the OVA β so you shouldn't treat them as one timeline.
π Story Chronology
The main canon is the original OVA line, which continues across its later installments.
- Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 1 and 2 (1992β1995) β the core story
- Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 3 and 4 (2003β2016) β the continuation
Which Order Should You Choose?
For the definitive experience, follow the original Ryo-Ohki OVA series through its four installments β this is the main canon and the richest version of the story. If you prefer a self-contained TV format, Tenchi Universe is a great standalone alternative with its own feature film, Tenchi Muyo! in Love. Just don't try to merge the continuities; pick the OVA line or a TV line and enjoy it on its own terms.
