How to watch

The Accountant follows Christian Wolff, a brilliant forensic accountant with autism who moonlights uncooking the books for dangerous criminal organizations and happens to be a deadly marksman. The surprise hit earned a long-awaited sequel that expands his world and his relationship with his brother. The original blends action with a thoughtful portrayal of autism, giving its hero depth beyond the gunfights.

🕐 Release Order

Release order is essential, as the sequel builds directly on characters and revelations from the first film.

1. The Accountant (2016)
2. The Accountant 2 (2025)

The sequel picks up Christian's story and deepens the bond with his brother Braxton, making the first film important setup. The sequel leans harder into the brotherly relationship teased in the first film, expanding a thread fans had wondered about for years.

📖 Story Chronology

Story order matches release order, continuing Christian's journey where the original left off. Because so much time passed between releases, a quick rewatch of the original is the best way to refresh the details before the sequel.

1. The Accountant (2016)
2. The Accountant 2 (2025)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch in release order. The 2016 original establishes Christian, his abilities, and the family dynamics that drive the sequel. Seeing it first makes The Accountant 2's character beats and callbacks far more satisfying. The nearly decade-long wait between films means the sequel reintroduces the key players, but watching the first keeps every revelation about Christian's past intact.
