The Monkey King is a dazzling Chinese fantasy film series bringing the classic tale of Sun Wukong to life with spectacular effects and star-studded casts. Here's how to watch the movies in order.
Adapting the legendary novel Journey to the West, The Monkey King film trilogy follows the mischievous, immensely powerful Sun Wukong from his rebellious origins to his role as a guardian on a sacred pilgrimage. Packed with mythology and lavish visual effects, the series tells a continuous story, so watch order is straightforward but worth confirming.
π Release Order
Release order follows the trilogy across its three installments.
- The Monkey King (2014)
- The Monkey King 2 (2016)
- The Monkey King 3 (2018)
The films progress in order, with the first serving as an origin story and the sequels depicting the pilgrimage, so the chronology matches release.
π Story Chronology
The saga moves forward in time, from Wukong's rebellion in Heaven to his adventures escorting the monk Tang Sanzang.
- The Monkey King (2014) β Sun Wukong's origin and rebellion
- The Monkey King 2 (2016) β the journey west begins

Which Order Should You Choose?
