Ma Dong-seok's punch-first detective Ma Seok-do has headlined one of Korea's biggest action franchises. Here's how to watch The Outlaws and The Roundup films in order.

It all began with The Outlaws, a crime thriller about a burly detective cracking down on gang violence in Seoul's Garibong-dong district. Ma Dong-seok, also known as Don Lee, played Ma Seok-do with a mix of brute force and deadpan humor that audiences loved. The film spawned The Roundup series, with each entry pitting Ma against a new ruthless villain, and several of the sequels became huge box office hits in South Korea.

๐Ÿ• Release Order

Release order is the easiest way to follow the series, and it matches the story order.

  1. The Outlaws (2017)
  2. The Roundup (2022)
  3. The Roundup: No Way Out (2023)
  4. The Roundup: Punishment (2024)

The franchise moves forward in time with each film, so there's no tricky prequel to worry about.

๐Ÿ“– Story Chronology

Each Roundup movie is set a few years after the previous one, with Ma Seok-do taking on cases ranging from killers preying on tourists abroad to drug rings and illegal online gambling empires. Supporting characters return, but every film tells a self-contained case.

  1. The Outlaws (2017)
  2. The Roundup (2022)
  3. The Roundup: No Way Out (2023)
  4. The Roundup: Punishment (2024)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch them in release order. The Outlaws is grittier and more violent than its sequels and properly establishes Ma's partners and his unique methods. From The Roundup onward, the films become slicker crowd-pleasers. If you just want a fun action night, any sequel works as a standalone, but you'll enjoy the running jokes more by starting at the beginning.
