Goodnight, John-Boy! The Waltons spans a pilot film, nine seasons and a string of reunion movies. Here's the best order to follow the family on Walton's Mountain.

The Waltons followed a large Virginia family through the Great Depression and World War II, narrated by Earl Hamner Jr., whose own childhood inspired the story. It began with a Christmas TV movie, ran on CBS for nine seasons and then returned with six reunion films. A modern remake of the original Christmas special arrived in 2021.

πŸ• Release Order

Release order is the natural way to watch, starting with the Christmas pilot that introduced the family.

  1. The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971)
  2. The Waltons Seasons 1–9 (1972–1981)
  3. A Wedding on Walton's Mountain (1982)
  4. Mother's Day on Walton's Mountain (1982)
  5. A Day for Thanks on Walton's Mountain (1982)
  6. A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion (1993)
  7. A Walton Wedding (1995)
  8. A Walton Easter (1997)
  9. The Waltons' Homecoming (2021)

Story order follows broadcast order almost exactly, with the reunion movies continuing the family's life after the war.

πŸ“– Story Chronology

The 1971 pilot is set in 1933, the series moves through the 1930s and 1940s, and the reunion films take the Waltons into the postwar years and 1960s. The 2021 film retells the 1933 Christmas story with a new cast, so it is a reimagining rather than a continuation.

  1. The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971)
  2. The Waltons' Homecoming (2021) β€” alternate retelling
  3. The Waltons Seasons 1–9 (1972–1981)
  4. A Wedding on Walton's Mountain (1982)
  5. Mother's Day on Walton's Mountain (1982)
  6. A Day for Thanks on Walton's Mountain (1982)
  7. A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion (1993)
  8. A Walton Wedding (1995)
  9. A Walton Easter (1997)

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch in release order. The original pilot sets the tone perfectly, and the reunion movies only matter once you've grown up alongside the children. Save the 2021 remake for a cozy holiday night when you want a fresh take on the story that started it all.
