Dario Argento's Three Mothers trilogy took nearly thirty years to finish, and a bold remake added another layer. Here's how to watch Suspiria and its sequels in order.

Italian horror master Dario Argento built his Three Mothers trilogy around three ancient witches: Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum and Mater Lachrymarum. Suspiria, with its blazing colors and Goblin soundtrack, is one of the most influential horror films ever made. Argento followed it with Inferno and, decades later, The Mother of Tears. In 2018, Luca Guadagnino released a very different version of Suspiria.

πŸ• Release Order

Release order covers the trilogy plus the 2018 reimagining.

  1. Suspiria (1977)
  2. Inferno (1980)
  3. The Mother of Tears (2007)
  4. Suspiria (2018)

The trilogy is linked by mythology rather than recurring characters, so its chronology is fairly loose.

πŸ“– Story Chronology

Each Argento film focuses on a different Mother in a different city: Freiburg, New York and Rome. Inferno introduces the lore of the three sisters, and The Mother of Tears brings the saga to a modern-day close. Guadagnino's Suspiria is set in 1977 Berlin and is a standalone reinterpretation.

  1. Suspiria (1977)
  2. Inferno (1980)
  3. The Mother of Tears (2007)
  4. Suspiria (2018) β€” standalone reimagining

Which Order Should You Choose?

Watch Argento's films in release order, starting with Suspiria, which is the essential masterpiece. Inferno is dreamlike and strange, while The Mother of Tears is uneven but completes the mythology. The 2018 Suspiria is best saved for last so you can appreciate how dramatically it reworks the original.
