Violet Evergarden is Kyoto Animation's breathtakingly beautiful story about a former child soldier learning to understand human emotion. With a series, an OVA, and two films, here's the correct order.
Few anime are as visually stunning or emotionally resonant as Violet Evergarden. It follows Violet, a young woman who worked as a weapon in war, as she becomes an Auto Memory Doll writing letters for others and slowly learns what love means. The franchise spans a TV series, a special episode, a side-story film, and a grand finale movie.
π Release Order
Release order lines up neatly with the intended experience, building from the series to its cinematic conclusion.
- Violet Evergarden (2018)
- Violet Evergarden: Special (2018 OVA)
- Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll (2019 film)
- Violet Evergarden: the Movie (2020)
The story unfolds in roughly the same order it was released, with the side-story film sitting comfortably between the series and the finale.
π Story Chronology
Chronologically, watch the series, then the OVA, then the Eternity side story, and finish with the movie, which brings Violet's journey to a close.
- Violet Evergarden (2018) β the main series
- Violet Evergarden: Special (2018 OVA) β episode 14
- Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll (2019) β a side story
- Violet Evergarden: the Movie (2020) β the finale
Which Order Should You Choose?
Release order and chronology are effectively the same here, so simply start with the series and work your way to the 2020 film. The special episode and Eternity are both worth watching, but if you're short on time, the essential path is the TV series followed by Violet Evergarden: the Movie. Have tissues ready β this is one of the most moving stories anime has to offer.
