American Crime Story dramatizes some of the most notorious true crime events in modern American history. Each season is a standalone story, so here is how to approach the anthology.
Developed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski and produced by Ryan Murphy, American Crime Story launched in 2016 with a riveting look at the O.J. Simpson trial that won nine Emmy Awards. Later seasons revisited the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace and the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. With star-studded casts including Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Darren Criss, and Beanie Feldstein, it is a must-watch for true crime and prestige drama fans.
๐ Release Order
There are three released seasons, each focusing on a different case.
- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016)
- The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018)
- Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021)
None of the seasons share characters or storylines, so the anthology can be watched in any order. Still, some viewers like to line them up by when the real events happened.
๐ Story Chronology
By real-world timeline, the O.J. Simpson trial unfolded in 1994 and 1995, Gianni Versace was killed in 1997, and the Clinton impeachment came in 1998. Note that the Versace season is told largely in reverse.
- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016)
- The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018)
- Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021)
Which Order Should You Choose?
Start with The People v. O.J. Simpson. It is the most acclaimed season and a perfect showcase of the show's blend of courtroom drama, media satire, and character study. From there, release order and historical order happen to line up, so you can simply continue with Versace, a darker and more experimental psychological portrait, and then Impeachment. Future seasons have been announced, and we will update this guide when they arrive. Fans should also explore Ryan Murphy's other anthologies, including American Horror Story.
