Dragonheart soared into theaters in 1996 with Sean Connery voicing Draco, the last dragon. Its direct-to-video sequels include prequels and standalone tales, so a watch order guide helps you make sense of the saga.

The original Dragonheart starred Dennis Quaid as Bowen, a disillusioned knight who teams up with the dragon Draco to con villagers, before the pair rise up against the tyrannical King Einon. It was a landmark for CGI characters and is remembered for its moving ending and Randy Edelman's soaring score. Universal later expanded the franchise with four home-video films featuring new knights, kings, and dragons.

๐Ÿ• Release Order

Release order shows the original followed by four lower-budget sequels and prequels.

  1. Dragonheart (1996)
  2. Dragonheart: A New Beginning (2000)
  3. Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse (2015)
  4. Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire (2017)
  5. Dragonheart: Vengeance (2020)

The later films jump around in time. The Sorcerer's Curse is a prequel to the original, Battle for the Heartfire continues that prequel story, and Vengeance is a standalone adventure in the same world.

๐Ÿ“– Story Chronology

Chronologically, start with the dragon Drago's prequel stories, then move to Draco and Bowen's tale, followed by A New Beginning and finally the standalone Vengeance.

  1. Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse (2015)
  2. Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire (2017)
  3. Dragonheart (1996)
  4. Dragonheart: A New Beginning (2000)
  5. Dragonheart: Vengeance (2020)

Which Order Should You Choose?

If you only watch one, make it the 1996 original, which remains the heart of the franchise. Fantasy fans who want more should watch in release order, since the sequels were made to be enjoyed on their own and the original's emotional ending hits harder without prequel context. For a rewatch, the chronological order neatly arranges the dragon lore. Patrick Stewart voices Drago in Battle for the Heartfire, a highlight among the sequels.
